Rapid Rescue

The rapid response team (RRT)—sometimes referred to in the literature as a medical emergency team—is a team of nurses and other health care professionals (respiratory therapists, pharmacists, emergency department personnel, and others) who bring critical care expertise to the bedside.

The teams may or may not include physicians. The essential concept is intervening to prevent harm when nursing staff is urgently concerned about a patient’s well-being. The key goal is to act before “failure to rescue” occurs and a patient has suffered a cardiac or respiratory arrest.
